Interior Minister, Olubunmi Orders Investigation into Alleged Feeding Conditions of Inmates in Calabar

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has ordered investigation into the alleged feeding conditions of inmates at Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar.

This comes following a viral video on Facebook showing the inhumane treatment of prisoners at the centre, including being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast.

Mr. Tunji-Ojo in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao on Sunday, described the incident “as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled”.

He directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter, stating that those responsible will be held accountable.

“The Minister warns that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and welfare of inmates will not be tolerated, adding that the service must ensure inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Alao noted.

Minister Tunji-Ojo disclosed that he will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody.

He further said that the findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken.
